SEPTIC SHOCK, a fatal condition that results to multiple organ dysfunction that almost always leads to death.

The disease can be caused by a variety of agents, but most often caused by virulent bacteria that has overwhelmed host defenses leading to a cascade of events. Certain immune mediators produced by the body in response to infection may sometimes cause problems rather than good. These mediators may cause cellular level damage leading to decompensation and ultimately to the classical presentation of sepsis.
Sepsis is diagnosed based on evidence or suspicion of focus of infection coupled with other clinical findings like fever, tachypnea, tachycardia, sensorial change etc.. The preceding manifestations can actually be seen with the common flu, and such can also be termed as sepsis.
The problem begins if the initial stage of infection deteriorates and affects other organ systems like the heart, kidneys, lungs etc. in this stage we can now label the condition as sepsis severe, if left unchecked, it can progress to septic shock.
The definitive measure of prevention is to avoid being infected in the first place, but unfortunately this is impossible. We are in a constant battle with the microbial world and that puts us at risk of infection and death, but our body was designed to combat the problem, just let your immune system do its job. Unfortunately their are sub groups of individuals that may be considered as immunocompromised like diabetics, the elderly, cancer patients, lupus patients, malnourished etc....... They are high risk individuals more prone to severe infections.
Maintenance of a good nutritional status, regular exercise, alcohol and tobacco free lifestyle will surely boost your immune system..
